Batting superstar Virat Kohli will have a chance to create history on Tuesday (March 4) and become India’s leading run scorer in the Champions Trophy. During India’s Champions Trophy 2025 semifinal match against Australia, which is scheduled to take place at Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Kohli needs to score at least 40 runs to achieve the feat.
The 36-year-old right-handed batter has 662 runs to his name in 15 innings of 16 Champions Trophy matches played so far across four editions. He needs 40 runs to go past Shikhar Dhawan’s tally of 701 runs. Dhawan played 10 matches for India in the Champions Trophy across two editions, and with the help of three centuries and three fifties, scored 701 runs.

Kohli has been in good form these days, and he would like to maintain his form in the knockout match. The former India captain scored 100 runs from 111 balls against Pakistan in the second Group A match played in Dubai on Sunday (February 23).
The semifinal match on Tuesday will be Kohli’s 50th ODI against the Men in Yellow. In his last ODI for India against the Aussies, Kohli scored a half-century for the Rohit Sharma-led side, and fans will have similar expectations from him once again.
Apart from breaking Dhawan’s record, Kohli will also have a chance to go past Kumar Sangakkara’s tally of 14,235 runs in ODIs and become the second leading run scorer in the 50-over format of the game.
Kohli has 14,096 runs to his name in 300 ODIs played so far, and he needs 140 more runs to achieve the feat.
The century on Tuesday will also help Virat equal Sachin Tendulkar’s record of nine ODI centuries against Australia, and he will also become the first batter in the world to register seven 50+ scores in the Champions Trophy and 24 50+ scores in ICC ODI events (ODI World Cup and Champions Trophy).
Tendulkar also finished his career with 23 50+ scores in ICC ODI events, whereas three more batters—Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, and Dhawan—have scored six 50+ scores in the Champions Trophy.
