“MS Dhoni will not be a part of CSK’s playing XI in IPL 2025”: Former India player makes a bold prediction

Former India and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni showcased his power-hitting skills in the nets as he gears up for IPL 2025, which begins on March 22. The season’s opening match will see defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

Before the 2025 mega auction, CSK retained Dhoni as an uncapped player for INR 4 crore. This was possible due to a rule allowing Indian players who haven’t played international cricket in the last five years to be classified as uncapped. Dhoni retired from international cricket in 2020, with his last appearance in the 2019 ODI World Cup semi-final.

As the new season approaches, the 43-year-old joined the CSK camp, impressing in the nets with some massive shots. Dhoni holds the record for most matches captained in the IPL (226) and is one of the most successful skippers, leading CSK to five IPL titles—matching Rohit Sharma’s record with Mumbai Indians.

Former Indian captain Anil Kumble made a surprising remark, suggesting that MS Dhoni might not take the field in IPL 2025, with Ruturaj Gaikwad leading CSK. Speaking on JioHotstar, he stated: “With Ruturaj captaining the team, Dhoni might not step onto the field this season. However, retention rules could keep him in the squad, and with the impact player rule, he can still contribute without playing every match.”

Over 264 IPL matches, Dhoni has amassed 5243 runs at an average of 39.12 and a strike rate of 137.53, including 24 half-centuries.
