“He has kept the team first”: Ex-Pakistan fast bowler lauds the selfless Team India player after Champions Trophy final qualification
India have advanced to the final of the ICC Champions Trophy, where they will play against New Zealand on March 9 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. The two teams met in the group stage, with India registering a 44-run win riding on Varun Chakravarthy’s five-wicket haul. Rohit Sharma has batted aggressively but hasn’t been able to put up a big individual score so far.
The team hadn’t started well, and the situation became challenging when he departed against Australia in the first semifinal. However, India were rescued by veteran Virat Kohli and the man in form Shreyas Iyer.
Rohit started a new batting template after the 2022 T20 World Cup, and the other players are following. The right-handed batter has given up on Daddy hundreds and focuses on adding quick runs. Former Pakistan pacer Wahab Riaz is a big fan of the opener and credits him with changing the team’s fortunes in the last four years.
“Rohit Sharma has kept the team first. India have changed a lot in the last four years and are regularly playing in the finals of the ICC tournaments. It is not a small thing to do and the credit goes to Rohit,” he said.
“This is something big for a captain. He started playing a new brand of cricket and told his players to follow him. When a captain leads from the front, his teammates adopt the same style,” Wahab Riaz said on Sports18.
Wahab wants to see Rohit go big in the Champions Trophy final in Dubai. India would rely on their star batter to add to the ICC trophy they won in 2013 under MS Dhoni’s captaincy.
