Long-off, long off, LONG OFF! Suryakumar Yadav! Suryakumar Yadav ne pakda hai apne career ka sabse important catch.” South Africa’s David Miller was perhaps only a few inches away from handing India a huge upset in the T20 World Cup Final in the June of 2024 if it weren’t for Suryakumar Yadav’s moment of brilliance at the long off position. Come today, Miller is once against caught by Indian(s), only this time for his choice of team he wants to see lift the Champions Trophy 2025 trophy.
The destructive Miller was the lone man standing in the second semi-final battle between South Africa and New Zealand where the Kiwis put up a daunting total of 362 after winning the toss and batting first. The Proteas, down and dusted, reeling at 218/8 in under 40 overs managed to cross the 300 mark, all thanks to Miller. Though the knock was in the losing cause, it still was an impressive one as Miller touched the 3-figure-mark in only 67 deliveries. He smashed 10 boundaries, and four maximums in his outing. The batter rocked his arms back and forth in celebration of his newborn.
Why is Miller being trolled?
Miller kept it candid after the loss while expressing his frustration towards the ICC for hectic and strange schedule. “I’ll be honest with you. I think I’ll be supporting New Zealand,” Miller said after South Africa were shown the exit doors of Champions Trophy by the dominant Kiwis. “It’s only an hour-and-40-minute flight, but the fact that we had to do that. It’s early morning, it’s after a game, and we had to fly. Then we got to Dubai at 4pm. And at 7.30 in the morning we had to come back,” before adding, “It doesn’t make it nice. It’s not like we flew five hours and we had enough time to recover and recuperate. But it was not an ideal situation still.
Although he mentioned that India were equally capable of emerging as champions as they have played good cricket and it’s going to be a good fight in the finals against Mitchell Santner’s sider, fans in India were quick to take jabs at the South African cricketer by reliving that catch by Suryakumar Yadav that became a decisive moment in India’s thrilling victory in the T20 Cricket World Cup.

That Surya catch
T20 Cricket World Cup 2024: India posted a total of 176 runs in 20 overs thanks to Virat Kohli’s 76-run knock but South Africa remained in the hunt till the very end. David Miller and Heinrich Klaasen gave India plenty scare as they hammered Indian spinners all around the park. The equation favoured South Africa as they needed 26 off 24 with 6 wickets in the bag. But things went downhill from there.
It came down to the wire, South Africa needed 16 off 6 deliveries. Hardik Pandya was given the job to bowl. The first ball, a full-toss and at almost waist length, was smacked by Miller. It looked like a six, it was a six. Well, almost. Suryakumar Yadav, stationed at the long off position, caught the ball, threw it back in play as he stepped over the boundary, then caught it again. It all happened in a split second and replays confirmed SKY had pulled off a blinder without once touching the boundary cushions.
